In 1927, Maud Ethel was a 39-year-old mother of four. Upon discovering she was pregnant, a desperate Maud realized she could not take on the responsibility of another child.
After a botched at-home abortion, Maud developed a blood infection, and five days later she passed away, leaving her four children motherless.
Maud never made it to her 40th birthday.
Nearly a century after Maud lost her life, we are still debating whether people have the right to make medical decisions for themselves and to control their own bodies. Someone is discovering right this minute that they are pregnant, and they too may face a life-altering choice now that access to abortion has been severely restricted in states across the country.
The youngest of those four children left behind when Maud passed away was named Mary Lou. She was our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She passed away in 2015 after a life without her mother, Maud.
We want to honor Maud by ensuring this generation is given the choices she never had. We invite you to join us in the fight for justice in honor of a life that ended too soon.
